Things I've Learned (The Hard Way)

1. When using a drill to mount anything on your kayak, pay attention and be very careful. It's obvious
from this photo that I did neither.

 
2. If you are going to be careless with your kayak there are some things that you should definitely invest in.


 
A plastic welding iron.


A heat gun.


HDPE welding filler material.

With some good advice from Wind & Water Boatworks, and an hour watching YouTube videos on kayak repair (there's a video for every situation), I managed to plastic weld my hole closed.
















She ain't pretty....but she'll float!

    Hey Mark! So, I have to ask... what were you trying to mount on your kayak? Was it a seat?

      Yep, it was a seat.I drilled through the seat pan to mount a fastener and didn't pay attention to how thin the gap was to the bottom of the kayak.....until I saw the floor through the hole.:) The guy at Wind & Water Boatworks talked me out of an epoxy plastic boat repair kit. He said that repair wouldn't last but welding it would. Instead of taking my $30 for the epoxy, he gave me 2 sticks of filler material and a quick explanation of how to do the repair my self. Nice guy.

    I didn't know HDPE was available as welding material, we've always used old laundry bottles, on cracks and in one case to salvage a found kayak which had run through a dam.

      I'm assuming that's what it was. It was square sticks of some type of HDPE material. I guess about any type of jug or bucket is made from HDPE. You just have to look for the logo.
